SMS Requirements

This self-study e-learning course has been developed to provide entrants to the aviation industry, including service providers, and airline frontline personnel, with an overview and understanding of the key principles and concepts associated with Safety Management Systems (SMS). As an outcome of this training, learners will acquire the necessary knowledge, skill and attitudes to support their organization’s SMS and increase aviation safety.

Participants will learn why SMS is a critical component of aviation safety, how it supports proactive hazard identification and risk management, and how maintenance personnel contribute to a strong safety culture. The course covers key SMS elements—including safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion—with a focus on real-world maintenance operations.

Emphasis is placed on understanding individual responsibilities, reporting systems, human factors, and compliance with regulatory requirements. By the end of the course, learners will have a clear understanding of SMS expectations, how SMS integrates into daily maintenance activities, and how their actions directly impact operational safety and regulatory compliance.
